About
This 20 credit module, Children and Young People's Emergency Care, aims to provide registered healthcare practitioners with the underpinning knowledge and skills to deliver safe, holistic evidence-based emergency care to children and young people.
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
At level 6 (undergraduate level)
- identify and explain pathophysiological processes which can precipitate both illness and injury in children and young people, articulating the clinical application of this knowledge.
- conduct a safe and evidence-based assessment of the acutely unwell or injured neonate, child and adolescent.
- evaluate management options of the acutely unwell or injured child and/or young person within ethical and legal frameworks.
At level 7 (Masters level)
- critically evaluate pathophysiological processes which can precipitate both illness and injury in children and young people, articulating the clinical application of this knowledge.
- conduct a safe and evidence-based assessment of the acutely unwell or injured neonate, child and adolescent.
- critically evaluate management options of the acutely unwell or injured child and/or young person within ethical and legal frameworks.
Entry requirements
You should be a registered nurse working in an Emergency Department, with experience of caring for children and young people for a minimum of 18 months. This module will teach you how to recognise common paediatric conditions, but not diagnose. As a result, it is not suitable for ANPs/ENPs.

- Caring for the collapsed neonate

- Child and family-centred care
Learning and Teaching
A variety of teaching methods will be used to create an inclusive learning environment including lectures, seminars, simulation, discussion, case-based learning, technology-enhanced learning and enquiry-based learning.
As the module has been designed utilising multiple learning approaches, you will require access to the internet.
Assessment
The assessment will be in the form of a written reflective assignment.
